Yeonggeumjeong Pavilion, Sokcho

On the coast where Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory and Dongmyeonghang Port meet, there is a pavilion that faces a small stone mountain and the sea called Yeonggeumjeong. Most people think that it is the name of the pavilion but, in fact, the stone mountain and the rocks that had existed in the area were collectively referred to as Yeonggeumjeong in the past.

East Sea has carried powerful waves into Sokcho every day. Every time the waves crashed into the stone mountain and enormous rocks, it is said that it sounded like geomungo, a traditional Korean musical instrument. That is why the area got the name Yeonggeumjeong, which means a place with numinous geomungo sounds. Another legend has it that fairies from the heavens came down, took a bath in the sea, and played geomungo before returning.

Some stories also say that Yeonggeumjeong holds large and flat rock where the hoofs of a general's horse are said to still remain and Jingbawi Rock from which the sounds of a gong are heard. It is unclear exactly when such stories began to be told, but what is certain is that the rocks and stone mountains at Yeonggeumjeong have lived countless years with the villagers.

During the Japanese colonial period, rocks of Yeonggeumjeong were gathered and used for constructing breakwaters and extending facilities in Dongmyeonghang and Sokchohang Ports. The size of Yeonggeumjeong continued to be reduced to become what you see today.

There are two pavilions at Yeonggeumjeong. The one at the top of the stone mountain offers a view of the sea at a higher ground while the one on the sea, which extends long towards the waters, enables you to examine the stone mountain and the sea more up close. Many people come to see the first sunrise of the year at these pavilions because it is the perfect place to watch the sun slowly come up from the waters while listening to the waves that sound like a geomungo playing.

However, it is not open when the waves are too high or if the area is under a high seas watch, so make sure to check the weather forecast before you go.
