Jeonju Hanok Village, located in the Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong areas of Jeonju, is the largest hanok (traditional Korean-style houses) village in Korea, boasting over 800 beautifully preserved hanoks. In an age where hanoks are increasingly scarce due to rapid urbanization, Jeonju Hanok Village is a shining example of the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. As you explore the village, you'll be captivated by its charming, time-honored architecture, making it a unique destination for visitors.
The Taejoro pathway is an ideal starting point for exploring the village. Taejoro pathway is 550-meter-long walking path that takes you from Pungnammun Gate to Omokdae and offers a fascinating journey through Korean history. Along the way, you'll encounter significant landmarks, such as Gyeonggijeon Shrine and Jeondong Catholic Cathedral. The cathedral, with its Romanesque and Byzantine architectural styles, is a favorite location for movie and TV drama filming. Opposite the cathedral is Gyeonggijeon Shrine, a cherished cultural heritage site, and it's considered the heart of Jeonju. The shrine, which translates to "a royal palace built on a joyful site worthy of celebration," houses the portrait of Taejo Yi Sung-gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty.
Jeonju Hanok Village offers a wealth of experiences, including visits to Jeonjuhyanggyo Confucian School, where the drama "Sunggyunkwan Scandal (2010)" was filmed, and the Choi Myung Hee Literary Museum, which honors the achievements of Choi Myunghee, the author of "Honbul."
