Hanbyeokdang Pavilion, the Place of Music and Dance
Welcome to Hanbyeokdang, a pavilion on a cliff. Interestingly enough, it's built right on the edge of a cliff.
Built in the early 15th century, it’s where some of the most renowned scholars, poets, and calligraphers would gather together to have academic debates and play. The beautiful landscape of this place is the main reason why they chose this place to mingle and relax.
They loved the sound of the river and the sight of the slowly disappearing fog right under the cliff. These are two of the reasons why they named this place one of the ‘Eight Great Views of Jeonju'.
They often held banquets at the pavilion, and hired female entertainers to perform a sword dance in front of them. When they danced, their moves were reflected on the surface of the water. The poets at the banquet must have found it beautiful, since the scene is described in many of their poems.
So Hanbyeokdang pavilion was a place of poetry, music, and dance, in the traditional style of Jeonju.
