Welcome to Yangsajae where you can still find traces of Korean history. Although it’s now more known as a traditional house to lodge, it's more than worth a visit because of its historical value. Yangsajae was originally attached to a Confucian school during the Joseon Dynasty. It served as a student dormitory for young Confucian school graduates to continue their studies and prepare for national exams for government work. However, even after a student passed the exam, he was still considered a pupil until the faculty announced that he had passed. Therefore, in some sense, the faculty ultimately determined whether the student was worthy of the government position or not. In those days, one of the main concerns of noblemen and government officials was how many students in their hometown passed the exam.
Yangsajae must have been a very prominent school because the Jeonjuhyanggyo Confucian School was the center of Confucian studies in the province of Jeolla-do. Later, the place became one of the first modern schools in Korea. It was also used as one of the buildings for Jeonju Elementary School, which was founded in 1897.
