The first queen of Silla
[Teacher]
This is the tomb of Queen Seondeok, the first queen of Silla. Isn't it beautiful, surrounded by the forest of pine trees?
[Student]
It is. What kind of queen was she?
[Teacher]
Well, she had brilliant diplomatic skills and focused on unifying kingdoms in the region, increasing power of Silla by appointing talented officials to key positions. She also made a lot of contribution to the development of science and art by building the largest Buddhist temple and the first astronomical observatory in the kingdom.
[Student]
Wow! She reminds me of Queen Elizabeth of first of England.
[Teacher]
They lived in different times, but they do share many things in common, as both of them made their kingdoms more powerful.
[Student]
Right.... But most of the kings and politicians in ancient times were men.
So there must have been some people who tried to undermine her authority.
[Teacher]
Yes. there were some who disrespected the queen.
But she successfully overcame all of the obstacles she faced with her intelligence and wisdom. Do you want to hear some stories about the queen's wisdom?
[Student]
Of course!
[Teacher]
OK, I'll tell you the story while looking around the tomb.
