Geumsansa Temple: Mireukjeon Hall
[Narration]
Now we shall examine the statues of Buddha enshrined in Mireukjeon Hall. Mireukjonbul Statue is a huge gilt bronze Buddha statue that reaches 11.82 meters in height. Beobhwarim Bodhisattva and Daemyosang Bodhisattva to the left and right of Mireukjonbul are both 8.79 meters tall and also made out of gilt bronze.
Mireukjonbul poses with an extended right hand and holds out a cupped left hand. The robes of the Buddha cover from the shoulder to the belly and they drape in fluid folds.
Built in the early 20th century, this Mireukjonbul statue is praised for its perfect sense of proportion and balance, despite its enormous size.
The two Bodhisattva statues on the sides look almost the same, the only difference being opposite hand gestures. Their faces are chubby and squarish, and large compared to their bodies. The two of them are wearing luxurious crowns. This facial expression and crown is typical of the style of Bodhisattva statues commonly produced in the late Joseon Dynasty. The depiction of burning beads on the robes over the chest was also a popular decoration for Bodhisattva statues in those days.
