Bulguksa Temple was built around 1200 years ago and has been registered on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. Among the numerous Buddhist temples built in Silla, the temple stands out as the most recognized and symbolic representation of Silla’s Buddhist culture. Not only does it showcase refined architecture, but it also harmonizes with nature, displaying the sophisticated culture of Silla.

During the construction of Bulguksa Temple, Silla was experiencing rapid growth in both culture and economy, focusing its techniques and artistic competencies on building this temple.

The construction of Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto was overseen by the same person, a man named Kim Dae-Seong, who served as the prime minister of Silla. Legend has it that in his previous life, he was born into a very poor family. His parents were advised that if he made donations to a Buddhist temple, he would lead a long and affluent life. Although his mother donated their owned land, Kim Dae-Seong passed away at a young age. However, after his first death, he was reborn into a noble family of Silla. He grew up and built Bulguksa Temple for his parents in his current life and Seokguram Grotto for his parents in his previous life.

Within the temple, there are several remarkable relics of Silla, with the most famous being the Dabotap Pagoda and Seokgatap Pagoda. Both are renowned for their harmonious and balanced appearance and their creative architectural style.
