The two-story stairways in Bulguksa Temple are known as Cheongungyo Bridge and Baekungyo Bridges. The upper section of the stairs is referred to as Baekungyo Bridge, while the lower portion is known as Cheongungyo Bridge.
These stairways lead to the main hall of the temple, housing the Buddha's statue. Ascending the stairs symbolizes entering the Buddha’s realm from the mundane world, and these stairs are considered the bridge connecting the two worlds. They serve as significant symbols of Buddhism found within Bulguksa Temple.
Moreover, they hold considerable architectural significance. When viewed from the side, their stable and elegant structure becomes evident. The application of the Pythagorean suggested golden ratio of 3-4-5 contributes to their sense of stability. This reflects the scientific approach adopted by the people of Silla as they constructed this architectural structure.
