Bulguksa Temple - Nakgagyo in Bulguksa
Nakgagyo to walk up to Gwaneumjeon Hall
The stairs located behind Museoljeon Hall are known as the “Nakgagyo” by which you can walk up to Gwaneumjeon Hall.
The stairs are quite steep, aren’t they?
Gwaneumjeon is seated at the highest place at Bulguksa Temple, and this embodies Mount Potalaka, the mountain where Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva dwells, which is why the steps were made to be steep to symbolize a tall mountain.
The steps that are tough to climb up also tell us that practicing the teachings of Buddha is extremely difficult as well.
Now, you may feel a bit tired but let's slowly walk up Nakgagyo and meet Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
