Twin Tree Pavilion and its Stele
This pavilion is where King Injo of the Joseon Dynasty took refuge for six days and five nights during the rebellion of Yi Gwal. Legend has it that King Injo, who had been leaning against one of the twin trees called ssangsu while worrying about the palace in Seoul he had left, felt delighted upon hearing news that the rebellion had been subdued. It is said that to celebrate this occasion King Injo designated the twin trees as rank 3 high officials.
The stele found at the pavilion describes King Injo’s stay here over six days and five nights in February during the 2nd year of Injo’s reign, seeking refuge from the rebellion of Yi Gwal. The words were composed by King Injo's Prime Minister Shin Heum, but the inscription’s calligraphy was done by Nam Gu-man, who served as Prime Minister during King Sukjong’s reign.
