Site of a large stud wall building at the Royal Palace Site
The site for the large stud wall building consists of the remains of a building used as part of the royal palace during the Baekje Period. When the building was originally constructed, the building’s flanks had no interrupting columns in the middle, whereas its front and rear sides each had nine pillars erected from ditches. Excavations revealed many round or rectangular pits used for setting up pillars. These pillars were to support the weight of the upper structure of the building, and buildings of such type are called stud wall buildings. Stud wall buildings are a testament to the appearance of roof-tiled houses, and their techniques were mostly used in the Gongju, Buyeo, and Iksan areas during the Ungjin and Sabi Period, and later exported to Japan.
