In the west of Geunjeongjeon Hall, you can find a large pond where willow trees flutter around. It, together the with Gyeonghoeru Pavilion in the center, shows astonishing scenery all year. Ponds of secret gardens are usually located in the forest, but the pond around Gyeonghoeru Pavilion is relatively out in the open air. The pond and the pavilion have created unique scenery that cannot be found in other palaces and have reflected the dignity of Gyeongbokgung Palace.
King Yeonsangun was famous for enjoying merrymaking in the Gyeonhoeru Pavilion. On the pond, he had built Mansesan Mountain with a moon palace and made a dragon boat to reach there. He used flowers made of colored cloth to decorate the mountain. For the dragon boat, he used the colored silky lotus flowers to decorate. Besides, he planted the coral tree in the middle of the pond.
In the latter half of his reign, King Yeonsangun selected beautiful female entertainers from all over the country. In the Joseon Dynasty, the dancers among female entertainers were called “Unpyeong”, and the musicians were called “Gwanghui”. The beautiful Unpeongs were selected to stay in the palace and named “Heungcheong”. Under the pavilion, a red silk tent was set up, and 3,000 people of Unpyeongs and Gwanghuis gathered to play and sing. It is presumed that the artificial island on the pond is the remains of Mansesan Mountain, built by King Yeonsangun.
There is a small pavilion in the northwest corner of Gyeonghoeru Pond. It is known as a building built by President Syngman Rhee, who was the first president of South Korea. However, when people found out he enjoyed fishing in the pavilion, which is a cultural asset, public opinion tended to be critical. Currently, it remains an annex to Gyeonghoeru Pavilion.
