After entering the royal administration office area, you may see the former Seonwonjeon Hall. It was considered one of the most sacred places in the palace, as it was used to store portraits of kings and hold memorial ceremonies. Whenever the king moved to another palace, the portraits were the first to move along. It was because, as a Confucian nation, the ancestral rites of the past kings were very important. Nevertheless, the ceremonies were relatively simple and humble so as not to place an undue burden on future generations.
There is a small door to the east of Seonwonjeon Hall. You may reach Yangjidang Hall by passing through the door. It served as a place where the king met with governmental officials in order to discuss political matters, and the clothes of former kings were kept. When Seonwonjeon Hall was undergoing maintenance, the precious portraits were stored in Yangjidang Hall.
Although the newly built Seonwonjeon Hall is not open to the public, the former Seonwonjeon Hall allowed us to visit its preserved royal authenticity.
