Bongmodang Hall, located behind Gyujanggak, was used as book storage during the Joseon Dynasty. In front of it is a juniper tree that is estimated to be more than 750 years old. It is designated as Natural Monument No. 194 for its long history and value. It is also depicted in a painting called "Donggwoldo", which records the appearance and scenery of Changdeokgung Palace in the mid-1820s.
Juniper trees grow in the mid-southern part of Korea, Ulleungdo Island, and Japan. Since it has a strong scent, it was also used as incense during ancestral rites, which were memorial events to console the spirits of ancestors. It was also often planted in gardens and parks. The juniper tree in Changdeokgung Palace was originally 6 meters tall, but it was damaged by the typhoon in 2010 and has become its current status.
There is also a large ginkgo tree around the juniper tree. As the ginkgo trees surrounding Bongmodang Hall provide breathtaking scenery in the autumn, many people come here and enjoy the view of fallen leaves. Why don't you enjoy the four seasons through the nature of Changdeokgung Palace and feel the time flowing in the royal palace?
