Yemungwan Office (Changdeokgung Palace)

The Yemungwan Office was the Office of Royal Scribes. It is located in the west of Injeongjeon Hall, and its name literally means “the government office in charge of literature and the arts”. It gathered all the best calligraphers and writers in Joseon who were selected from the successful candidates of the past civil examination to be the official bureaucrats of the office. For a period of time, they even needed to obtain recommendations from former officials as a prerequisite. They were responsible for recording the king’s words and his order in the documents.

The current Yemungwan Office building was restored in 2005 based on its depiction in the painting of the Eastern Palace, which depicts Changdeokgung Palace in the mid-1820s. As the government offices were often relocated and renamed by times and the king’s order of succession, it was difficult to track their location history. Due to the fire in 1811, all the documents and books were burned, including the signboard written by King Yeongjo.

Some royal palaces have not been relocated from their original sites, and their functions have remained the same. However, after the turbulent times and various events in Joseon, restoration is more likely.
