Seongjeonggak Hall was the study room of the crown prince, who was responsible for the future of Joseon. The crown prince's residence, also called Donggung Palace, is located to the east of the palace, as the name suggests. The crown prince lived, studied, and met his retainers there.
The name Seongjeonggak contains the meaning of studying with a sincere heart and a proper mindset. The crown prince learned about the Confucian scriptures three times a day and the other six classes in the hall, such as horseback riding, calligraphy, and arithmetic. The Crown Prince's classes were arranged from the morning to the evening. In addition, there were exams to review and confirm what he had learned.
The southern pavilion is called Bochunjeong Pavilion. The crown prince is often compared not only to the sun rising in the east but also to the spring. That is why the character Chun, which means spring in Korean, is used in the name of the pavilion.
In fact, the most famous thing in Seongjeonggak Hall is the plum tree next to Jasimun Gate. This plum tree was said to be around 400 years old and has been very famous since ancient times. It has been called "Seongjeongmae”, which literally means the plum blossom in Seongjeonggak Hall. When the fragrant plum blossoms bloomed, they blended with the walls of the Seongjeonggak Hall to show their beauty. Many people come to Seongjeonggak Hall to take pictures with it. Why not capture this moment in time with the lovely "Seongjeongmae"?
