The Buyongjeong Pavilion is the first pavilion you can see when you enter the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung Palace. It was named Buyongjeong Pavilion because it is located next to the pond called Buyongji Pond. “Buyong” here means lotus flower, which suggests its shape as a lotus flower.
Buyongji Pond is a square pond with a round island inside. It was designed in such a way to reflect the Korean traditional ideology that heaven is round and earth is square in the Joseon Dynasty. A commemorative party was held in the pavilion for those who had passed the civil service examination. Also, King Jeongjo enjoyed fishing and boating here.
In addition to serving as a place to relax, it was also utilized as a classroom. It was open to a relatively large number of people compared to other areas. The two-story building located on the north side of Buyongji Pond served as the royal library and research institute. They were established during the reign of King Jeongjo. The first floor is called Gyujanggak, and the second floor is called Juhamnu.
The entrance to Gyujanggak is named Eosumun Gate. Its name metaphorizes the relationship between the king and his subjects, which should be as close as fish and water. The large gate at the center was for the king to pass through, and the small gates on both sides were for his subjects.
There is a pavilion called Yeonghwadang Hall, which is located on the east side of Buyongji Pond. Let's move on and check on it!
