Hwasun Madangbawi Dolmen
[Man]
A dolmen appears as you climb a bit further up from Gamtaebawi quarry. This is the Madangbawi dolmen.
[Friend 1]
“How much further do we have to climb?”
[Friend 2]
“Just a little longer.”
[Friend 1]
“Huh? “That must be it! Right over there.”
[Friend 2]
“This is the Madangbawi dolmen.”
[Friend 1]
“It's huge!”
[Friend 2]
"The Madangbawi dolmen has a large capstone that is 6.5 m long and 1.1 m thick. It's called that because the rock is as large as a yard."
[Friend 1]
"It's really large!"
[Friend 2]
"The Madangbawi dolmen is a typical go-board dolmen."
[Friend 1]
"A go-board?"
[Friend 2]
"Because it looks like a go board. It is a dolmen built by making a stone chamber underground and covering it with a large capstone. It's also called a foundation dolmen. Also, it was once called a southern-style dolmen.
[Friend 1]
"Go-board, foundation, ...and southern style?"
[Friend 2]
"The grand-looking go-board dolmens like this one are found in the Honam and Yeongnam regions, so they used to be called southern-style dolmens in the old days. However, they are now referred to as go-board or foundation dolmens.”
[Friend 1]
"It's like they have one real name but several nicknames.”
[Friend 2]
“Yes! That's right!”
[Woman]
Around the Madangbawi dolmen, there is an oval-shaped partitioning stone indicating that this place was a cemetery. Near this dolmen, there is a small go-board dolmen and a table dolmen.
[Man]
A table dolmen has a burial chamber constructed from large flagstones exposed to the ground. It has a burial chamber made of 4 or 6 wide flagstones, with a flat capstone placed on top of the burial chamber. They are called table dolmens due to their resemblance to a table. In the past, these dolmens were mainly found in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula and the Liaoning region of China, and thus they were called northern dolmens. However, as they were later found in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula as well, they are now called table dolmens.
[Woman]
