Cheonnyeonbulsimgil Trail, Seonamsa Temple

1. Cheonnyeonbulsimgil Trail, Seonamsa Temple

[Man]
Jogyesan Mountain in Suncheon has a trekking course called Cheonnyeonbulsimgil Trail. The trekking course starts at Seonamsa Temple and ends at Songgwangsa Temple. It is about 12 kilometers long. The course was built under the theme of taking time for mediation while walking along the path that the monks to took to practice asceticism. There are two stories behind its foundation. One is that Adohwasang priest built a hermitage called Biroam on the hillside of today's Jogyesan Mountain in 529, during the reign of King Seongwang of Baekje, and this was renamed as Haecheonsa Temple of Cheongnyangsan Mountain during in the seventh year of King Seongwang, which later became Seonamsa Temple. Another story is that Doseon Guksa built Seonamsa temple to remedy topographical defects in 875, the first year of King Heongang of Silla.

A book written by Park Jeon-ji, "Yeongbongsan Yongamsa Jungchanggi”, passes on this story.

[King Seongmocheon (Guardian King of Seongmo]
"Doseon... Doseon!"

[Doseon Guksa]
"Who... who are you?”

[King Seongmocheon (Guardian King of Seongmo]
"I am Seongmocheonwang, the Sacred Mother and Celestial King of Jirisan Mountain. I have something to tell you."

[Doseon Guksa]
"What do you mean? Your majesty.”

[King Seongmocheon (Guardian King of Seongmo]
"To unite the three Hans of Mahan, Byeonhan, and Jinhan, three temples must be built. Then the war will end on naturally, and peace will come. Remember, Doseon, you must build three temples.”

[Doseon Guksa]
"Yes, your majesty. I will make sure to build three temples.”

[Woman]
The three temples founded by Doseon according to the commands of Seongmocheonwang were Seonamsa Temple, Unamsa Temple, and Yongamsa Temple.

[Man 1]
"Do you know why this place is called Seonamsa Temple?”

[Man 2]
"Not really.”

To the west of Seonamsa Temple, there is a flat, large stone that is about 10 meters high. Since ancient times, people have referred to the place where hermits with miraculous powers used to play baduk (go), and that rock has given this place the name, Seonam.

Located at the end of Cheonnyeonbulsimgil Trail, Songgwangsa Temple is named after Songgwangsan Mountain, the previous name of Jogyesan Mountain, and there are several interpretations about Songgwang. First of all, according to the legend passed down orally, this mountain was called Songgwang because it would serve as "a great place where Sippalgong, the eighteen aspects of emptiness, would come into life to spread Buddhism widely". The interpretation suggests that the word "song", meaning a pine tree, was broken down to form the word Sippalgong, and the syllable "gwang" refers to gwangpo or the wide spread of Buddhism. This method is that of breaking down each Chinese character sand dividing them into different groups. Another interpretation of Songgwang is as follows. Kim Yeong-su argued that this mountain had been called "Solme" by local people because it was full of pine trees, and thus the name Songgwangsan was derived. According to his claim, the syllable "gwang" of Songgwang was originally transformed from "gang", meaning a hill. Im Seok-jin, a Buddhist monk, saw Kim Yeong-su's interpretation as most reasonable when he wrote the "History of Songgwangsa Temple".

There are many things that catch the eye on the way from Seonamsa Temple to Songgwangsa Temple. Visitors can taste the tea grown in the wild, and there is also a spacious tea experience center where visitors can learn the tea ceremony. Visitors can also fully enjoy the beauty of the forest while passing between Keun Gulmokjae hill and Songgwang Gulmokjae hill. In Songgwangsa Temple that stands at the end of Cheonnyeonbulsimgil Trail, a Ssanghyangsu tree can be found, which is the only Alpine juniper in South Korea as well as a natural monument. This place is visited by many people, as the legend tells that anyone who touches this tree will go to heaven.
