The Biggest 5-day Market in Honam Region
There are several markets in Suncheon but the biggest one is Aretjang. Originally, it was referred as Nambu Market in 1977, but among the local people of Suncheon, it was called “Aretjang.” Naturally, it was officially renamed as “Aretjang,” after revising the ordinance in 2009.
Aretjang of Suncheon is open at all times but a 5-day market is on the 2nd and 7th (2, 7,12,17,22, and 27). On those days, the marketplace is packed from the entrance, Pungcheongyo Bridge, leading to the mouth of the alley of Suncheon Pharmacist. Fresh goods from daily caught seafood from the coastal waters of Suncheon to rare herbs and products from nearby Mt. Jiri are on display. Specifically, local farmers bring out their produces for sales so that you can get same quality products at various prices and quantities.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, there is a night market. In summer, they open from 6 to 11 P.M., and in winter, from 5 to 10 P.M. Unlike the daytime, various food stalls come in and fill the space with lively energy. Since they offer various fusion dishes, it’s a lot of fun to choose from. On a stage, they also hold a singing contest or a music concert so that people from various regions can come together and enjoy the night market.
The following are must-not-miss dishes at Aretjang Market of Suncheon – patjuk, or red bean porridge; sundae gukbap, or blood sausage and rice stew; and jajangmyeon, or black bean sauce noodles. These dishes are popular for their affordable prices and generous portions. The dishes from the daily market, the 5-day market, and the night market are different so you can always stroll around the markets on a full stomach.
