Maaebul of Doseonsa

Maaebul of Doseonsa

“Maaebul refers to a carved image of bodhisattva or Buddha in the rock-wall of a cliff. As these are carved in granite cliffs or rocks in Korea, their value is incomparable throughout the world.”

“I heard that Maaebul of Doseonsa is quite famous?”

“Yes, that’s correct! Maaebul, the most distinguished asset of Doseonsa Temple, is an enormous rock wall about 20 meters high, which has been carved with the image of Avalokiteshvara, or the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion. It has been designated as tangible cultural property No. 34 by Seoul City.”

“What are some of the notable characteristics of Maaebul?”

“Maaebul of Doseonsa does a good job of illustrating the compassionate character of Avalokiteshvara.”

“I see! It’s amazing that such a historical cultural relic exists within Seoul.”

"Maaebul of Doseonsa is constantly visited by devotees as it is a mystical prayer ground due to the belief that one day, a prayer will be granted. Why don’t you pray for a wish?”
