Songdo Yonggung Suspension Bridge
Feel the thrill of walking on the sea while admiring the natural scenery
Teacher:
Songdo Yonggung Suspension Bridge is 127 m long and 2 m wide and connects Amnam Park and the upper part of Dongseom Island, a small uninhabited island across the sea. It is a restoration of the old Songdo Cloud Bridge, a popular Songdo landmark.
Student:
What happened to the old Songdo Cloud Bridge?
Teacher:
The old Songdo Cloud Bridge, also known as the Suspension Bridge, was a 150 m long and 1.8 m wide bridge that connected Songrim Park and Geobukseom Island.
It was installed in 1965 and was popular in Songdo Beach along with the cable cars. But it was demolished in 2002 when it was damaged by Tropical Storm Selma.
Then, the Songdo Yonggung Suspension Bridge was restored in Amnam Park and opened in June 2020 as part of a project for the restoration ’of four major landmarks in Songdo.
It is rapidly emerging as a representative tourist destination in Busan.
Student:
It is 25 m above the sea, so you can feel the thrill of walking on the sea. The view of the sea that refreshingly stretches along the horizon and the scenery created by the uniquely shaped cliffs are very impressive.
Teacher:
So it is rapidly emerging as a representative tourist destination in Busan. Like me, citizens of Seo-gu, Busan, have free admission, but there is a separate admission fee (KRW 1,000), except for children under the age of 7, the disabled, and people of national merit. If you cross the Yonggung Suspension Bridge and arrive at Dongseom Island and enjoy the 360-degree view of beautiful Songdo beach in Busan, you will feel that the admission fee was not wasted.
Student:
I’m curious why it’s called Yonggung Suspension Bridge…
Is it because we’re walking on the ocean?
Teacher:
This is because, in the legend of Geobukseom Island, this was the middle point to meet to enter the Dragon Palace, which was the wedding venue for the fisherman and Inryong, the dragon king’s daughter. It’s a bridge that connects the people to the dragon king.
So, there is a saying that people who cross this bridge and go to meet the dragon king will be blessed with either good fortune, success in life, or good health, and that love will come true for young men and women.
Student:
Really? Dragon king… I will come visit often,
so please give me good fortune, success in life, and good health!
