Bogwangru of Guryongsa
“This is Bogwangru Pavilion of Guryongsa! Out of the three gates to the temple, this pavilion functions as Bulimun or the Non-Duality Gate!”
“Bulimun …? Dad, What is Bulimun, the Non-Duality Gate?”
“Bulimun is the last gate into a temple. The word ‘Buli’ means that wisdom is not dual and there is no discrimination in Buddhism. It is designed so that one must pass through Bogwangru in order to enter Daeungjeon!”
“Dad, I think I can see all of Guryongsa from here!”
“As the lower part of Bogwangru Pavilion is open, the passage in the middle leads to the front of Daeungjeon. This kind of architecture is commonly seen in temples built on steep slopes. What do you think? Doesn’t it make you feel cool?”
“Yes, Dad! The second floor of the Pavilion is really spacious and cool!!”
“It is said that the biggest straw mat in Korea once lay here upon the floor! The pillars on the second floor are simple cylinders, but they were decorated with lotus flowers and phoenixes to make them appear quite exquisite. The front of second floor is also left wide open!”
“You know what? After coming up here to Bogwangru, I feel that it was a good idea to visit Guryongsa Temple! Hehehe…!”
“I agree! Hahaha…”
