Bogwangsa Temple

Bogwangsa in Goryeong Mountain, Paju is imbued with the love that King Yeongjo, the longest-living Joseon King, had for his parents, and is known for being a mystical temple with lots to see. Bogwangsa Temple is designated as Gyeonggi-do Cultural Asset No. 158.

This is a thousand-year-old temple built during the reign of Unified Silla’s Queen Jinseong. It is also the resting place of Sukbin Choi, and received offerings from the royal family until the late Joseon period.

Built during the Silla period and burned down during the Imjin Wars, the sanctuary and monastery was restored in 1622 by two monks, Seolmi and Deogin. It is also recorded that they established the Dosolam Buddha.

Engravings that depict Daeungbojeon remain with the traces of the royal family.
Yeongjo's filial love can be seen in Eosil Hall and the juniper tree in front of it. Eosil Hall is a cozy shrine that houses the portrait and ancestral tablet of Sukbin Choi. A four-corner roof raised in the middle is placed at the front and side. The imposing juniper tree in front of Eosil Hall is more than 300 years old, and is said to have been planted by Yeongjo when he built the hall.

Yeongjo extensively repaired Bogwangsa’s Daeungbojeon and Manseru, and engraved his writing on one side of Daeungbojeon. The current signboard at Daeungbojeon is known to contain Yeongjo's handwriting.
After being renovated by Yeongjo, Daeungbojeon and Manseru survived—even the ravages of the Korean War—as a special trace personally left by Yeongjo.
