Haewoldang Venerable Bongnyeogwan’s Monument of Gwaneumsa and Haewolgul Cave
[Visitor]
Is this the venerable Bongnyeogwan? What did the venerable actually do?
[Curator]
During the reign of the 19th King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty, about 500 buildings of the temple were closed down, along with many shrines, because they were told that there were too many evil spirits in Jeju. Then, it was Bhikkuni Bongnyeogwan who rebuilt the temple in 1908. During the Japanese Occupation period, some funds were also gathered here to support the resistance movement in the fight against Japanese. Haewolgul Cave was the place where Bhikkuni Bongnyeogwan stayed, hoping to be awakened, for three years.

Now that I am looking at it closely, I can picture her exerting every effort towards her practice.

This place is sought by many devotees wishing to pray, regardless of bad weather or limited space. Here, only a couple of adults can fit, and they need to stoop down to stay inside.
