Beomjonggak, the Bell Pavilion, of Gwaneumsa Temple
As you enter the bell pavilion, every item here looks different from each other.
This building houses the four Buddhist musical instruments: the 'beomjong (dharma bell)' is made of bronze, the 'beopgo (drum)' made of cow skin, the cloud-shaped 'unpan (gong)', and fish-shaped 'mogeo (wooden drum)'. The meanings behind these are: the 'beomjong (dharma bell)' is to save sentient beings suffering in hell; the 'beopgo (drum)' is to save land animals; the 'unpan (gong)' is to save wandering spirits; and the 'mogeo (wooden drum)' is to save sea animals. The original building was burnt down in 1948 during the April 3 Jeju Uprising. This one was then reconstructed as a two-story pavilion in 1979.
If you want to experience a different charm of Jeju, come to Beomjonggak and immerse in such dignified atmosphere!
