Maitreya Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva of Future Buddha, is to appear in the Pure Land of the Buddha 567 billion years after the Buddha has entered nirvana, and will save all sentient beings. In order to be born in his world, one must practice good deeds and attain wisdom. The Bodhisattva of Future Buddha was created with volcanic rocks for two reasons. First, he has been very popular among the people of Jeju, and second, these rocks are very common in Jeju, being part of a dormant volcano. The Great Bodhisattva of Future Buddha is here to wish for the prosperity and comfort of the people of Jeju and to pray for the Pure Land of the Buddha. It is one of the attractions you really must see on the island.
