Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, of Yakcheonsa Temple
There are numerous Buddha statues enshrined in Yakcheonsa Temple. Let’s take a look at some of statues here.
The one on the right is Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light. There is a special reason why the statue is enshrined here. The name 'Seogwipo' is derived from the aspiration of Buddhists to return to the Western Pure Land. Therefore, enshrining Amitabha Buddha in Yakcheonsa Temple in Seogwipo carries the wish for the swift fulfillment of Buddhists' vows. The Buddhas on both left and right are made of bronze. The four pillars inside illustrated the idea that the blue and yellow dragons offering the precious Cintamani that are more valuable than their lives to the Buddha. This also indicates a countless number of Buddhists from Korea as well as abroad who have participated in the completion of the temple. The wooden carving painting behind the Buddha is another unique feature of Yakcheonsa Temple.
The one on the left is “Bhaisajyaraja Buddha,” the Medicine Buddha that is closely connected with the name of the temple – the syllable ‘yak’ means medicine and the syllable ‘cheon’ is water. For a long time, this place has been known for its mineral water fountain with medicinal effect, many people decided to try it by themselves and come to believe in its healing powers. The Medicine Buddha was enshrined in the hope that his dignity and spiritual power can ease the suffering and cure the sicknesses of sentient beings.
