Descendents of Park Hyekgeose and Queen Alyeon
[Teacher]
This is Oreung which refers to "five tombs." These tombs belong to five members of the Park family, Park Hyeok-geo-se, the founder king; his queen Alyeong; and three kings from the family.
[Student]
So these are royal tombs. Then why do people call these “five tombs" and not specify which tomb belongs to whom?
[Teacher]
That's because it is unclear to whom each of the tombs belong.
And also there is another reason for the name.
[Student]
Oh, what is it?
[Teacher]
According to historical records, Park Hyeokgeose went up to heaven after he died.
And seven days later, his body fell from the sky in five pieces.
[Student]
A corpse cut in five pieces? Ooh, that's creepy!
[Teacher]
So, people tried to put his body back together for burial.
But suddenly a giant snake sprang from the ground and blocked them.
So they ended up burying each of the five pieces separately.
For this reason, these tombs are called Oreung meaning “five tombs" or sometimes Sareung, meaning “snake tombs."
[Student]
It's kind of scary but also interesting.
[Teacher]
Yes, it is. Now, why don't we go to Oreung Tombs and Alyeong Well where Queen Alyeong was born?
[Student]
Okay.
