The inside of the grotto is enclosed with glass to preserve it. As you continue the tour, you’ll hear more of these aspects. For now, let’s focus on what we can see.
First, observe the main Buddha in the center. Notice its serene appearance, it is perfectly in tune with the surrounding silence.
In fact, the statue is not placed at the precise center of the rotunda. Instead, it slightly set back. The head of the statue appears relatively larger than its body. Both the position and size were deliberately calculated to provide viewers with viewer a sightline exuding grandeur. Similarly, the lotus petals on the back wall create the illusion of a halo when you gaze into the statue’s eyes.
Nevertheless, the statue itself exhibits ideal body proportions, adhering to the “golden ratio,” accentuating its beauty and a sense of harmony.
Take note of the hand gesture depicted by the statue. In the Buddhist tradition, each gesture of Buddha carries a different meaning. The gesture on this Buddha symbolizes warding off demons.
Curious about how this sizable statue was placed inside the cave? Interestingly, the statue was carved first, and afterward, the grotto was constructed around it.
Behind the glass walls, various statues and intimidating figures stand like guards. At the center of the rotunda stands the Buddha's statue, surrounded by diverse wall images. These statues and drawings represent highly esteemed pieces of Buddhist art.
