Overall Landscape of Hanseong

Let’s look at the overall landscape model of Hanseong. It is believed that the ruling class, including the king, primarily resided in Pungnaptoseong Fortress and Mongchontoseong Fortress. If you look at the building sites in the fortress on the model, you can find the palace, royal garden, and official buildings inside the fortification.

Another essential feature of Hanseong was the royal tombs complex, where the tombs of kings and ruling classes were situated. On the left side of the model, you can see the ancient tombs in Seokchon-dong, located to the southwest of Mongchontoseong Fortress, which are representative of this complex. It is assumed that individuals from the highest social class were buried in this area.

Have you ever wondered where the common people lived? If you look at the residential area on the model, you will discover that they mainly resided outside the fortress. In 2004, an excavation revealed a well in the eastern area outside Pungnaptoseong Fortress, providing evidence that people lived in this area during that period.

On the other hand, you can find the domestic animals in the ranch on the model, including horses and cows, that played important roles in agriculture, transportation, and war during ancient times. Consequently, the royal family of Baekje built a ranch to systematically manage their domestic animals.
