Woljeonggyo Bridge in Gyeongju is a beautiful structure originally built during the Unified Silla period. The name “Woljeonggyo” appears in the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), which records that in the 19th year of King Gyeongdeok’s reign, two bridges, Woljeonggyo and Chunyanggyo, were constructed over the Namcheon stream, south of the palace. Although the bridge was lost during the Joseon Dynasty, it was carefully restored over more than a decade, with the reconstruction completed in April 2018. Isn’t its long, straight form simply stunning?
Woljeonggyo Bridge is also full of fascinating stories. If you take a moment to look down at the Namcheon stream below, you’ll find yourself in a place tied to the famous tale of Wonhyo, a monk known for the “skull water” legend. When a royal envoy came with a decree from the king, Wonhyo deliberately fell into Namcheon stream, which caused the envoy to take him to Yoseokgung Palace to dry his clothes. It was there that Wonhyo spent a night with Princess Yoseok, resulting in the birth of Seolchong, a celebrated scholar. Nearby, you’ll also find Jaemaejeong, known as the site of General Kim Yushin’s home. Historical accounts tell us that he often crossed Woljeonggyo Bridge on his way to Cheongwansa Temple. Even Arab merchants who brought glass to Silla and troops departing for war are said to have crossed this historic bridge.
You can reach Woljeonggyo Bridge easily from either the parking area or the Gyodong side. As you approach, the wide entryway and the rows of thick pillars create a striking first impression. From the bridge, you can take in the picturesque views of Namcheon stream, with Seondosan and Byeokdosan mountains to the west and Wolseong to the east. Don’t forget to explore the second floor of the pavilion, where you’ll find an exhibition hall showcasing artifacts and the story of Woljeonggyo Bridge’s restoration.
For a truly unforgettable experience, step onto the stepping stones in front of the bridge and take in the full view of Woljeonggyo as it gracefully stretches over the stream. During the day, you’ll be able to admire the bridge’s elegant structure in the sunlight, while at night, the soft glow of the lights transforms it into a magical sight, revealing a whole new side to its charm.
