Storage Pit Found in the Fortress
Along the walking trail of Mongchontoseong Fortress, there is a pit house exhibition hall where you can view a circular storage pit discovered within the fortress. These storage pits have a wide top and a narrow bottom, with a total of 31 such pits found in Mongchontoseong Fortress.
In fact, the exact purpose of these storage pits remains certain. They were usually found in dwelling sites from the Bronze Age. In Mongchontoseong Fortress area, many of them were also found around pit houses, which served as the residential area during the Baekje period. The stable temperature within the pits suggests that people likely used them for food storage. Baekje people stored food near their houses and retrieve it as needed.
Furthermore, various pottery items were uncovered in some of the pits at Mongchontoseong Fortress. This suggests that people may have buried dishes and food items in these pits, possibly as part of ritual practices.
