The United Nations Memorial Cemetery is the only UN-certified cemetery. It is a place where fallen UN soldiers, who sacrificed their lives for world peace and freedom, rest in peace. There are several main sites and memorials including the Memorial Service Hall, Memorabilia Hall, two Turkish Monuments, Greek Monument, Australian Monument, British Commonwealth Monument, and two ponds.
As soon as the Korean War broke out on June 25, 1950, the UN immediately dispatched Allied Forces to fight. This was the only incident in history where UN forces were sent to a troubled region worldwide. A total of 22 nations participated in the war, with 16 providing combat forces and weapons, and 5 contributing hospital ships, medical staff, and supplies. Throughout the war, which lasted about 3 years (from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953), 40,896 UN soldiers from the 17 participating nations lost their lives, including those who provided medical assistance like Norway.
From 1951 to 1954, around 11,000 fallen UN heroes were buried at the UN Memorial Cemetery. However, the remains of soldiers from 7 countries including Belgium, Colombia, Ethiopia, Greece, Luxembourg, the Philippines, and Thailand, along with some from other nations, have since been repatriated to their home countries. Currently, 2,309 fallen soldiers from 11 countries, including 36 Korean soldiers who died in battle alongside the UN troops, are buried in this cemetery.
Every year on November 11, the "Turn Toward Busan International Memorial Ceremony in honor of the Fallen of the Korean War" is held at the cemetery. Under the slogan of “Moment to Be One, Turn Toward Busan,” the entire world observes a minute of silence towards Busan at 11 AM on November 11. Let us all remember this day and pay a silent one-minute tribute to the deceased heroes.
