Songdo Beach
Korea's first public beach
Teacher:
Welcome to the Songdo Beach Trip!
Student:
Wow, it’s the ocean! Why is this place called Songdo?
Teacher:
This place was named Songdo because it has had many pine forests since old times, and it was the first public beach in Korea that opened in 1913. It was the No. 1 tourist spot in Busan and was called the Naples of the East. It was a great beach that was selected as the best tourist destination in the country from the 1960s to the 1970s because of its clean white sandy beach and clear water.
Student:
I heard this from my grandma. She said she came to Songdo Beach for her honeymoon, hehe.
Teacher:
At that time, there were many things to enjoy, including the cable car, and the surrounding scenery of nature was also very good, so many tourists came to visit. It is a place that holds the memories and romance of lovers and newlyweds of that time.
Student:
There are not that many people here now compared to Haeundae or Gwangalli Beach.
Teacher:
As development accelerated in the 1980s, a lot of sand was lost, and the cable car and surrounding facilities were damaged by Tropical Storm Selma in 1987 and Typhoon Maemi in 2003, so the number of visitors to the beach significantly decreased.
However, with the restoration of old Songdo landmarks such as the Busan Air Cruise, marine diving platform, and Yonggung Suspension Bridge, tourists are coming back again. Now, shall we go together to see the famous Busan superstar Songdo Beach?
