The Gigantic Tomb No. 3
The gigantic tomb you see to the right of the entrance is Tomb No. 3. Let’s explore the construction process of this tomb. Initially, a leveled surface was created by laying mud and gravel on the ground. Then, the flat polished stones were stacked on top. The first layer, which was 90cm thick, was followed by a second layer, slightly inward, and a third layer placed on top of them. Notably, the height of the third layer was twice as tall as the others.
During the excavation process, experts determined that the third floor was 4 meters high. However, it was restored much lower height than the actual tomb, which had seven layers, as evidenced by photos from the Japanese colonial era. Nevertheless, since the restoration project was executed based on speculation, the tomb was restored in its original form, with the three layers appearing in a damaged state.
Fragments of celadon and gold bead necklaces from China were unearthed from this tomb, but no burial facility was found. Since many stone mound tombs of Goguryeo have burial facilities above the third floor, it is believed that the original burial facility of Tomb No. 3 was damaged and destroyed.
