On the right side of Daehan Hospital, there stands a statue of Ji Seokyoung, an esteemed doctor, scholar, and linguist from the late Joseon period, renowned for introducing the smallpox vaccination. Often seen as my successor, he is considered a pioneer in Western medicine. Also, he holds a significant place in the history of Daehan Hospital's medical school. Ji Seokyoung proposed the establishment of a modern medical school and became its first principal when it was founded in 1899. He spearheaded the education of students, resulting in 18 graduates in Western medicine from Daehan Hospital's medical school in 1903.
Above all, Ji Seokyoung was the first doctor who introduced the smallpox vaccination in Korea. Duchang, known as smallpox in the West, was a dreadful disease. Its victims endured high fever and chills for the initial three days, with blisters making survival uncertain. Villages erected Duchang guardian posts at entrances and prayed fervently during outbreaks. However, once Duchang spread, communities were utterly devastated. The fear of Duchang was so profound that it was termed Hogumama, signifying an unwelcome visitor penetrating every household.
Fortunately, Ji Seokyoung tirelessly learned about the smallpox vaccination in Japan and vaccinated cowpox to prevent Duchang in people. His efforts led to the widespread adoption of the smallpox vaccination, alleviating the fear of Duchang. Interestingly, Ji Seokyoung even served briefly as 'Sung Kyun Kwan Jeonjeog,' the library director of Sung Kyun Kwan, so there's a kind of connection between us.
The second floor of Daehan Hospital hosts a medical museum, perfect for exploring Korean medicine's history. Additionally, the hospital's clock tower, believed to be Korea's oldest, is open for visits at 11 AM and 4 PM. Don't forget to reserve your spot if you're interested.
Let's move to our next stop. Follow the path down from Madubong Peak and head back towards the main gate of Seoul National University Hospital. Please be cautious while crossing the road, especially with the traffic. Once across, walk along the wall of Changgyeonggung Palace on your right until you reach the main entrance, Honghwamun Gate. We'll continue our tour from there.
