Introducing the Presenter 8
Hello there! I'm here to guide you through the 'Path of Learning.' I'm Kim Haksoo, Sung Kyun Kwan Daesaseong. It's a pleasure to meet you.

Sung Kyun Kwan, where I work, was the cream of the crop of Joseon's educational institutions, only accessible to the elite few. It served as a hub for the foremost intellectuals of the time, a prestigious center of learning. In contemporary terms, the Daesaseong of Sung Kyun Kwan would be akin to a modern university's chancellor. Given that Sung Kyun Kwan was the sole university in the country, you can grasp the immense significance of the Sung Kyun Kwan Daesaseong in that era.

Despite lacking abilities and skills, I've been honored by the king to become a Daesaseong of the esteemed Sung Kyun Kwan. To briefly introduce myself, I am Kim Haksoo, the son of Kim Youngsoo from the Gwangsan Kim Clan.

There’s a concern that I'll share only with you. As the country undergoes rapid changes, I've been pondering what kind of education and research are necessary for grooming new talents. But so far, I haven't found the answer. My king has also urged significant changes for Sung Kyun Kwan to align with this evolving world, and it's been weighing heavily on me.

Fortunately, I'm able to embark on this journey along the Jongno Modern Street with all of you today, and perhaps we can seek the answer together. Oh, and lucky for us, today's destination isn't far from Sung Kyun Kwan. I'm quite familiar with the area and visit it often, so no need to worry.

Now, let's dive into the Path of Learning.

Our first stop is the former site of Daehan Hospital, later known as Seoul National University Hospital. To get there, we'll go through the main gate of Seoul National University Hospital. The path can get pretty busy, so let's watch out as we head up there.

Back in the day, this spot was super peaceful. Hamchunwon, the royal garden next to Changgyeonggung Palace, kept it secluded. In King Seongjong's reign, the 9th king of Joseon, they made Changgyeonggung Palace for three queens of the former kings. To complement the palace's eastern side, they planted trees and put up walls, and that's how Hamchunwon Garden got its name. A garden embracing spring—what a beautiful name, right? Haha, Joseon's elegance really shines through names like these.

Prince Yeonsan, who was dethroned in 1506, expanded Hamchunwon Garden by demolishing nearby houses, leading to discontent among the people.

Fortunately, King Jungjong restored it to its original state after the coup.

Hamchunwon Garden was changed again during the reign of King Yeongjo, the 21st king of Joseon. The Sueun Tomb, which is the shrine of Prince Sado, previously in Sunhwabang, was moved to this location. King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon, honored his deceased father, Prince Sado, who tragically passed away in a grain chest at the order of King Jeongjo’s grandfather. He bestowed upon Prince Sado the posthumous name 'Jangheon,' renaming the shrine from Sunhwabang to Gyeongmogung Palace in remembrance. Unfortunately, all the structures are gone now, and only the grounds of Gyeongmogung Palace remain within Seoul National University Hospital.

Oops, that was a bit long-winded on the explanation about Hamchunwon Garden. My apologies, this place is the special royal history from my time, so I tend to get carried away with it. Well then, let's head straight up to Daehan Hospital.
