Now, here we are - Baek In-je House. I've looked into this person separately, and he was truly remarkable. At some point, his vision aligned well with the direction I had in mind for modernization. It is also interesting that such an individual owned this house.
First, let's take a tour of the house, and then I'll explain the individuals associated with this place.
Baek In-je House is incredibly spacious. The land area alone is almost 2,500 square meters, containing a sarangchae, anchae, byeoldang, byeolchae, daemunchae, and jungmunchae. What's most astonishing is the innovative architectural design. For instance, originally, the sarangchae and anchae were divided into a space for men and a space for women, but in this house, they are joined together.
As the times and lifestyle changed, the architecture followed suit. This kind of construction was probably possible because it was the early 1910s. The use of Japanese housing-style corridors and the incorporation of bricks and glass windows reflects the architectural characteristics of this period. Moreover, making one side of the anchae a second floor can be considered a modernized hanok.
Now, recalling my explanation, let's go through the daemunchae, Jungmunchae, and carefully examine the sarangchae, anchae, and byeoldang area. The architecture is sophisticated, and the decorations are refined, don’t you agree? This house often appears in movies, typically portrayed as the residence of an affluent pro-Japanese traitor. It even made an appearance in the movie 〈Assassination.〉
However, the actions of the Baek In-je House's owner and the actual use of the house differed from its atmosphere or the portrayal in movies. Now, please make yourself comfortable and listen to the story. Or, while listening to my story, feel free to explore different areas of the house and discover parts you haven't seen yet.
Baek In-je House was built in 1913 by Han Sangryong, who was the executive director of Hanseong Bank at the time. Soon after, ownership transferred to Hanseong Bank, and it became a gathering place for followers of Cheondogyo, a Korean indigenous religion. Cheondogyo believers, who were key figures in the March First Independent Movement, gathered here to discuss the direction of the country's independence.
In 1932, Choi Sunik, a young magnate in Gaeseong, acquired the house. Choi Sunik was also interested in the press and took over the Chosun Joongang Daily, appointing Yeo Woonhyung as its president. Chosun Joongang Daily was the newspaper that closed due to the Erasure of the Japanese National Flag by Sohn Kee-chung.
Later, the name we use today, Baek In-je, acquired this house. Baek In-je, too, is a historical figure worth remembering. Despite being a top student at Osan School and Kyungsung Medical School, he faced expulsion due to his participation in the March First Independence Movement. After overcoming many challenges, Baek In-je returned to the medical field, graduating as the top student from Kyungsung Medical School. However, once again, his involvement in the March First Independence Movement became an issue, and he was ultimately denied a medical license.
He managed to obtain a medical license after two years of working as a second assistant, a position lower than an assistant, in the Japanese Colonial Government Hospital. Later, while employed at the Japanese Colonial Government Hospital, he earned a doctoral degree in medicine from the University of Tokyo. Following studies in Europe, he established Baek Hospital. After the liberation, he served as a chief professor and hospital director at Seoul National University College of Medicine. Unfortunately, during the Korean War, he was captured by North Korea, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Thanks to the preservation of Baek Hospital and this house, we can still remember Dr. Baek In-je.
He paved a path similar to the modernization I had envisioned. I hoped we could produce excellent doctors and establish good hospitals with our own efforts. Although opportunities dwindled and were delayed due to the Japanese colonial period, it's fortunate to see someone succeed in this way.
Alright, let's move on to the next location. The next place to explore is the Seoul Museum of Education, located next to the entrance of the Jeongdok Library.
