Hong Nanpa's House

This is another beautiful house. It is known as a house built by a German missionary in the 1930s. See the special window structure that opens up and down.

This place, too, used to be home to another foreigner. But now, it's known as the house of Hong Nanpa, a Korean musician who is known for composing 'Garden Balsam' and 'Spring of the Hometown.' It's said that Hong Nanpa lived the last 6 years of his life here.

Hong Nanpa is a man who left a significant footprint in modern Korea's Western music. He first took an interest in Western music when he was going to Saemunan Church.

He was a musician who learned to sing and play the violin at Joseon Musical Academy, the first educational institute to teach Western music in Korea, and he went on to Japan and America to study Western classical music. After returning to Korea, he earned the love of many Koreans by hosting recitals and leading an orchestra.

However, after his imprisonment for the Suyang Club incident in 1937, Hong Nanpa turned pro-Japan due to the pressure from Japan, and some say that his music changed after that. How unfortunate.

This place also has an interior design like that of a small museum such as Dilkusha. Perhaps it would be a good idea to take a look around here for a while. And then we'll go to the next place. Let us climb up the stairs in what appears to be the garden of Hong Nanpa’s house and go uphill. A small stone post there is our destination.
