Site of Royal Buildings
We have just passed by the site of the central entrance to the Baekje palace. Now, we have arrived at a building site on which archaeologists believe the main building of the royal palace of Baekje once stood. The vestiges of the building's foundations reveal that the palace's largest, probably two-storied, building was constructed upon it.
Archaeologists carried out repeated excavations of the site to study and restore the original building's foundations. You may refer to the photos on the information panels at the entrance to the site to get a clearer idea of how the foundations were prepared for the building.
The builders first dug holes in the ground, then filled them with clay by pounding it down hard, before laying stone bases on which columns were erected. The foundations show that Baekje builders took the utmost care when building a solid, durable structure.
The scale of the foundations of the building located here, and their location in relation to the other building sites, tell us that it was the most important of all the buildings of the palace. It was probably the throne hall, where the Baekje king would have held official meetings with his cabinet to discuss state affairs.
