Heuksando Island, Sinan
Heuksando Island, located in Heuksan-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, is located in the southwesternmost part of Korea, which is part of the Dadohaehaesang National Park. As the central island of the Heuksangundo, it is named “Heuksando Island” because it seems to be covered in black when viewed from a distance due to the thick pine forest. The island is also known as the birthplace of the Hongeo(fermented skate) and is also famous for its marine cultural heritage.
As Heuksando Island is far from the land, it has been the place where many people were exiled to. Jeong Yak-jeon, the second elder brother of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong and a civil servant of the late Joseon Dynasty, wrote the "Jasan-eobo," which documented 155 species of fish and other marine products he collected during his exile here on Heuksando Island. The book recorded the details of the species' names, forms, distributions, and characteristics. The Sachon Seodang in Sari Village, where he nurtured younger students during his exile, has now been transformed into a Exile Culture Park. The park features the "Heuksando Island Exiles Chart," which provides information about the people who had their exile on Heuksando Island.
Other attractions on Heuksando Island include Heuksando Port Angel Lighthouse, Heuksando Island Lady, the beautiful landscape of Sangrabong Peak, and the Migratory Bird Museum.
Among all the attractions, the 24 km-long coastal road of the island is the perfect drive course to see the beautiful nature and cultural relics round the island. Come and feel the scent of nature and history on an island that retains ancient mysteries, Heuksando Island in Sinan.
