Gageodo Island, Sinan
Gageodo Island, located in Heuksan-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, is named after the quote “an island that people can live” by Admiral Jangbogo in the Silla dynasty. Besides this remark, Gageodo Island also takes pride in its magnificent view created by the steep mountain shape and towering cliffs.
Getting to Gageodo Island is not easy without certain determination because it takes four and a half hours even if you ride a high-speed boat from Mokpo Port without stopping. However, as difficult as it is to get there, the island preserves its natural scenery and remains untouched by human hands. It is an island that matches the nickname of an unexplored island with such intoxicating beauty just by looking around.
The entire island is made up of unique rock formations that are centered around Doksilsan Mountain. The sea cliffs and sea caves developed around the coastline boast stunning scenery. Some of the major attractions of "Eight Scenic Views of Gageodo Island" include Doksilsan Mountain Peak, Janggunbawi Rock, the cliffs of Seomdeungbando Peninsula, the panoramic view of Kukheuldo Island, and Kalbawi Rock.
Designated as a scenic point on September 2, 2020, Gageodo Island holds symbolic significance as the southwesternmost island of Korea, recognized for its diverse vegetation and terrain. Apart from its breathtaking landscapes, Gageodo Island also plays an important role in geography and diplomacy because it safeguards the southwestern part of Korea.
