Uido Island, Sinan
Uido Island, located in Docho-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, is the main island of Ui-gun, which consists of 27 islands. The name Uido Island is derived from the two peninsulas protruding on both sides of the island, resembling the ears of a cow.
On this island, there is a rare and endangered species named white daphne and it is famous for its pure white flower and far-reaching fragrance. The white daphne is sometimes referred to as "Cheonrihyang" because its scent is said to travel for miles. Therefore, when white daphne blooms, Uido Island is known as an island that is filled with the fragrance of these heavenly flowers.
Uido Island is also named "Island of Mystery" because it has many different attractions. The name Dalteunmollang-gil came from the beauty of the moon that hangs from the high peak when looking at Sangsanbong Peak from the village. "Mollang" is the Jeolla-do dialect for mountain peaks, so Dalteunmollang-gil means "moon-floating mountain peak," referring to its scenic beauty, and it is an old road that extends from Jinri Village to Donmok Village through Yeri Village.
Another attraction is the Pungseong Sand Dune, which is a massive dune about 50 m in height, known as the "Desert in the Island." It was created purely by wind and time without any artificial structures; this unique attraction draws many tourists to visit Uido Island.
The marks of Uido Island being a strategically important site during the Joseon Dynasty can be found throughout the island. Uido Wharf will be a suitable example, as it was built in 1745 during the reign of King Yeongjo and is the oldest and most well-preserved wharf in South Korea. Hence, Uido Wharf is also designated as Monument No. 243 of Jeollanamdo Province.
Uido Island, with its exceptional natural beauty and well-preserved historical and cultural heritage, is a perfect island to walk on while enjoying leisure time.
