Maldo Island, Myeongdo Island, and Bangchukdo Island, located in Gunsan-si, Jeollabuk-do, are popular tourist destinations best known for their stunning natural landscapes. As an archipelago, these islands have different and unique features that are waiting to be explored at once.
Maldo Island, located at the end of the Gogunsan Islands, is also known as the "Kkeutseom." It is famous for the “Thousand-Year Pine Tree” rooted on a large rock and the last manned lighthouse in Korea, the "Maldo Lighthouse." Visitors can also observe the natural monument of the Precambrian wave rock formations, dating back to nearly 590 million years ago.
Myeongdo Island is also called Yaksan Mountain because dozens of medicinal herbs have grown withstanding the sea breeze, and the name Myeongdo Island was given because the water is clear and clean as if the moon and the sun are combined.
As for Bangchukdo Island, it has a lot of rocks and strong waves, but many people visit this island because it is famous as a sea fishing spot. Besides fishing, there are other attractions with unique forms of rocks, such as "Dongnimmunbawi Rock" and "Sirutteokbawi Rock." You can also enjoy island trekking while walking on the bridge connecting Bangchukdo Island and Gwangdaedo Island and immersing yourself in the variety of charms that the island brings.
