Sonjukdo Island, located in Samsan-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, is one of the islands comprising the Sonjugyeoldo, along with Sogeomundo Island, Pyeongdo Island, and Gwangdo Island. It is situated on the route to Geomundo Island. The origin of its name comes from the time during the Japanese invasions of Korea when General Lee Dae-won of Nokdo Manho sacrificed himself on this island. It was initially called "Sondaedo Island," meaning "suffered great loss from losing a great figure," but was then renamed Sonjukdo Island in 1914. Upon arriving at Sonjukdo Port, you will see the statue of General Lee Dae-won. Every year on March 3rd of the lunar calendar, a ceremony called "Sungmojae" is held to honor General Lee Dae-won.
The coastline stretching along the clear sea and soft sand beach is perfect for many tourists to enjoy camping and swimming, where they can also experience the vitality provided by nature.
In addition, the trail is connected by three mountains where General Lee Dae-won raised a beacon in Bonghwasan Mountain, Gittaebong Peak, which is the highest peak of Sonjukdo Island, and a large rocky mountain named Samgaksan Mountain. The trail guides tourists along the rugged coastline that is harmonized with the coastal scenery created by rough waves, attracting visitors to explore the island.
