Jangbongdo Island, Ongjin
Jangbongdo Island, located in Ongjin-gun, Incheon Metropolitan City, is an exquisite island with protruding rocks and sea cliffs around the coastal area. It is a 40-minute boat ride from Sammok Quay, Yeongjongdo Island. The name "Jangbongdo Island" comes from its elongated shape and numerous mountain peaks. There are various trekking courses with different difficulty levels along the mountain peaks, making it a popular place for trekking.
During spring, especially in the cherry blossom and azalea blooming seasons, Jangbongdo Island will be dyed pink. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful spring filled with the fragrance of flowers while walking along the blooming trekking trails and promenades.
Besides Malmungogae, which is famous for its cherry blossom, and the Ongam Cloud Bridge, where you can enjoy the scenery of the sea of Jangbongdo Island, there are various attractions such as Gamakmeori Observatory, Handeul Beach, and Jinchon Beach with the beautiful glow of sunset.
Ongam Beach in particular, which is the representative beach of Jangbongdo Island, takes pride in its 1 km-long fine white sand beach. Behind the beach is a forest full of pine trees, making it a popular place for campers. Ongam Beach has also been known as a Golden Fishing Ground since the Joseon Dynasty, and legends related to the abundant marine resources are also passed down. It is said that a fisherman named Choi, who used to cast nets every day, once discovered a mermaid caught in his net. He was delighted at first, but her eyes looked so sad that he released her back into the sea, and since then, every time he cast his net, it was filled with fishes. In fact, upon arriving at the wharf on Jangbongdo Island, you are welcomed by the mermaid sculpture erected in memory of the mermaid's blessing.
