Daeijakdo Island and Soijakdo Island, located in Ongjin County, Incheon Metropolitan City, belong to Deokjeokgundo. In the past, they were known as havens for pirates, so they were called Daeijakdo Island and Soijakdo Island, meaning "large pirate island" and "small pirate island," respectively.
Daeijakdo Island is known as a clean and pleasant island that has been designated as a marine eco-conservation area. It is an exotic island where you can observe the mysterious "Puldeung" that submerges at high tide and is exposed at low tide twice a day. "Puldeung" refers to a sand island, which is called a sand pool due to the abundance of sand. It is called "Puldeung" because the sandbar resembles the back. "Puldeung," which is fully exposed at low tide, is said to boast a large scale of about 300,000 pyeong (0.99 km2) from Daeijakdo Island to Soijakdo Island nearby.
Besides "Puldeung", other attractions on Daeijakdo Island include the Red Cloud Bridge before reaching the top of Buasan Mountain. There is also Jageunpuran Beach, where the golden sands sparkle and the oldest rock formations in the Korean Peninsula are estimated to be around 2.51 billion years old.
While Soijakdo Island is smaller in scale, there is Yakjinneomeo Beach, which has very fine sand and a pine tree forest; Beolan Beach with rocks on the seashore; and Soijakdo Gaetti-gil, a trekking course that passes both mountains and seas.
All beaches on Daeijakdo Island and Soijakdo Island have gentle slopes and fine sand, so children can enjoy playing in the water comfortably. Why not spend your next summer vacation in Daeijakdo Island, Soijakdo Island, Ongjin?
