Gyeryongsan National Park
Do you know the second place in Korea to be designated as a national park, following Jirisan National Park? It’s Gyeryongsan National Park located in Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do.
Gyeryongsan Mountain got its name because its ridges resemble the shape of a dragon wearing a rooster’s comb. The Chinese characters for rooster (鷄) and dragon (龍) were used to form its name, as it suggests a place of ever-changing mountains. Coupled with its great accessibility, the park is full of visitors all year-round.
Gyeryongsan National Park is a great place to enjoy the changing beauty of nature across four seasons. Its breathtaking nature shifts with spring, summer, fall, and winter; so much so that there are names for each seasonal sight. In spring, the whole mountain is covered with blooming flowers, earning it the name “Chunsan Baekhwa.” In summer, the lush greenery is so abundant that it is named “Noeum Bangcho.” In fall, the entire mountain turns red, known as “Mansan Hongyeop,” and in winter, snow blankets the deep valleys, giving it the name “Simgae Baeksul.” With such unique scenery each season, it is fun to discover new sights every time you visit.
Gyeryongsan National Park is home to numerous attractions, including Baekje cultural heritage sites, ancient temples, and scenic spots, making it an ideal tourist destination. In particular, large temples are placed across the mountain. With Donghaksa Temple to the east, Gapsa Temple to the northwest, and Shinwonsa Temple to the southwest, creating a balanced layout within the mountain.
Gyeryongsan National Park has long been known not only for its stunning landscapes but also for its positive energy. Yi Chung-hwan's Taekliji, written during the Joseon Dynasty, mentioned that there are four greatly energizing places in Joseon, and Gyeryongsan Mountain is one of them. Shall we set off to Gyeryongsan National Park to experience this beautiful natural setting and receive its good energy together?
