Seonam Gangnu
The Gakru was used as the military command post during emergencies, and there were a total of 4 Gakrus in the Fortress, the Seonam Gangnu being one of them. It was situated in an elevated area, and was therefore suitable for observing the situation both inside and outside of the Fortress. Its proximity to the Yongdogil also made it a strategically important point during wars.
On the other hand, there was a great chance of having our troops’ situation being exposed if the enemies occupy the Seonam Gangnu. This was why there is a long wall built along the side up to the mountain, so that enemies unaccustomed to the local geography would not be able to see everything. The Seonam Gangnu was also called the “Hwayangru”, which meant a structure built to the south of the Hwaseong Fortress.
